“Guard Girl Problems”. Tumblr.com. March 18, 2015.

I looked at this Tumblr account to get some ideas about other people’s experiences in marching band.  I learned about different problems encountered specifically by members of color guard (the people who spin flags, etc.) in addition to marching band members in general.  I used some of this information in my writing in addition to using some of the picture from the Tumblr account in my own post.

Goders22. "DCI Athletes." YouTube. YouTube, 14 Feb. 2007. Web.

In this video, a tenor drums marcher in Drum Corps is hooked up to mechanisms that measure his heart rate and oxygen intake.  Before marching, just hearing the band play without him spikes his heart rate, meaning he has an adrenaline rush just thinking about marching.  Picking up his drum added about 30% to his body weight.  While marching, his heart rate and breathing rate were as high as a marathon runner and a sprinter combined.  This research is very important to my piece because it shows the athleticism that marchers display.

Greenwald-Gonella, Haley. “Musicians as Athletes”. Halftime Magazine, 2010. Web

This article focuses on Drum Corps International (DCI), which is an intense version of marching band that allows marchers to go on tour for the summer, learn a marching band show, and compete against other corps around the country until, at the end of the summer, they all come together and compete at a final competition, which allows judges to decide who is the best.  The article specifically breaks down into different categories: “Heart of an Athlete”, “Conditioning”, and “Injury Prevention”.  Each of these categories is discussed, and each pulls the information back to why DCI is a sport.

I want to use this article as ideas for points in my argument.  Each of the categories used is an idea that I can pull into my piece to add another layer to the argument that I am trying to make.

Lehman, Katherine. “Out of the Tunnel”. 9 Dec. 2014.

This is the original piece that inspired the idea to write my article.  It is a short story that I wrote for a creative writing class in fall of 2014.  The story discusses the life of a girl who ends up marching in the Michigan Marching Band as she looks back on all of the moments that got her there.  It focuses on the fact that both of her parents went to U of M and marched in the marching band and her personal previous marching band experiences.  I decided to keep the topic of marching band, although I changed the rhetorical situation and the argument of the piece.

“#marchonrome”. Twitter.com. March 12, 2015.

On Twitter, the hashtag “marchonrome” was used as a response to the Jim Rome Tweet that I decided to focus on.  While doing my research, I looked through the Twitter feed that resulted from the hashtag to get ideas and see responses.  Most of the Tweets were outraged responses that were either just angry or gave some sort of argument against Rome and his feelings about marching band.  Notable Tweets included the army serving America in their marching band and pictures of a marching band that had the opportunity to travel to the city of Rome because they were in the band.  Many of my ideas for this paper were inspired by reading the Tweets and looking at other people and their arguments.

Santoro, Sabrina. “Marching Band Requires Physical Stamina- Should it Be Considered a Sport?”. High School Illustrated, 2012. Web

This article discusses the requirements of a marching band member, specifically concerning the physicality of the activity.  It has a focus on the parades that marching band members are a part of- marching miles down a parade route carrying a heavy instrument and wearing a wool uniform.  Marching on the field and physical practices are also topics that the article covers.

The main purpose of this article in my research is the format.  Although some information and themes from the article are found in my piece, the reason I looked at this article was to find a format that I liked for my own piece.

Sassak, Aimee, personal communication, February 17, 2015.

In a short interview, I asked Aimee about her experiences in the Michigan Marching Band.  She gave me some great information about her personal experiences, as well as broader insights about marching band as a whole.  The most important information I gained was her own research regarding the amount of calories burned in one day of band week.
